AXION / Careers / Forward Deployed Engineer, FoodFlow

Forward Deployed Engineer, FoodFlow

AI-augmented delivery for food distribution and manufacturing software. Internally, we call this role a Conductor.

  • Melbourne CBD (on-site)
  • Full-time

The role

FoodFlow is AXION's software for food distribution and manufacturing businesses. It covers sales ordering, purchasing, inventory, warehouse, production, accounts, delivery and reporting, with the pricing, margin and freshness rules that matter in food. It runs in the cloud with a separate database for each customer, a web application, a mobile warehouse and driver app, and integrations with accounting, eCommerce and supplier systems. We're taking FoodFlow to new clients and need someone to help scope, shape and land it with them.

We build software almost entirely through AI coding agents, but this isn't vibe coding. Every change follows the existing architecture, standards and data model, goes through automated checks and is reviewed before it ships. A Conductor carries a client problem from discovery and business rules through system design, AI-assisted implementation, testing and go-live.

You won't write production code. The agents do that, under a real engineering process. But you own the engineering outcome: you set the guardrails and tests, hold the work to the bar a senior engineer would, and catch where the agents get it wrong or overcomplicate it.

Client discovery and business analysis

  • Run discovery with new and existing clients, mapping their sales, purchasing, warehouse, production, delivery and accounts processes, including the rules, exceptions and workarounds behind them
  • Facilitate requirements workshops, sprint reviews and UAT, and manage expectations on scope, timeline and trade-offs
  • Turn conversations and evidence captured in KOLLAB, our AI-native discovery tool, into process maps, business rules, PRDs and acceptance criteria an AI coding agent can execute without ambiguity
  • Own the gap between what the client does today and what FoodFlow supports, challenging legacy processes rather than simply reproducing them

Engineering ownership, without writing code

  • Reason about data models: entities, relationships, and what breaks downstream when one changes. This is the most important technical skill for the role
  • Review schema changes, queries and migrations for their effect on existing data, queries and reports
  • Trace a request end to end through the app, API, business logic, database and background jobs, and know when work should run asynchronously
  • Scope integrations with accounting, eCommerce and supplier systems, including error handling and reconciliation
  • Bring working knowledge of REST APIs, cloud fundamentals and security, including authentication, customer data isolation and secrets handling
  • Review AI-generated plans and changes for correctness, security, simplicity and fit before they ship

Delivery

  • Work with AI coding agents as the human in the loop: set direction, define guardrails and tests, and approve or reject the outcome
  • Support onboarding: data migration scoping, configuration, training and go-live
  • Keep requirements, architecture notes and business rules documented so client knowledge doesn't live only in your head

What you'll bring

  • Genuine software engineering depth: you've designed or reasoned about a data model, API contract, architecture or production failure, not just documented one
  • Hands-on experience building or implementing at least one workflow-heavy system, such as an ERP, CRM, warehouse or supply-chain system
  • Experience running client discovery, workshops or demos and owning the outcome
  • Strong written communication, turning ambiguous requests into clear business rules
  • Comfort pushing back on scope or timeline when the technical reality demands it
  • Comfort with pricing, margin and traceability rules, which carry real financial and compliance weight in food

Nice to have

  • Food distribution, wholesale, manufacturing or logistics experience
  • ERP, accounting or EDI integration experience, for example MYOB, NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics or Xero
  • Experience directing AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. Genuine interest matters more than experience
  • Exposure to multi-tenant SaaS
  • Business analysis certification (CBAP, PMI-PBA) or equivalent experience

Your first 90 days

  • Fluent in FoodFlow's core domain model: customers, orders, products, pricing and inventory
  • Running client discovery sessions with light supervision and capturing processes, rules, exceptions and acceptance criteria accurately
  • Directing AI implementation plans, catching the obvious misses before work starts, and taking a scoped FoodFlow change through build and testing
